Renata Kokanović is a Professor of Sociology of Health (Honorary) at RMIT University. Renata is an experienced research leader, mentor and research manager, formerly the Social Equity Research Centre Director at the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies. She has worked at the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and RMIT University, holding internationally prestigious senior research fellowships. Renata is an interdisciplinary scholar at the intersections of critical health and mental health studies, social theory, and medical humanities. Her work has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals, including Social Science & Medicine, Sociology of Health & Illness, and Medical Humanities, as well as in book and book chapters.
Renata has led and collaborated on numerous research projects, securing funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Discovery, and Linkage projects, as well as the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC). She has received category 2 to 4 funding, including from the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) and the Victorian Department of Health. Renata is a Founding Director of Healthtalk Australia, which serves as a repository of online resources based on qualitative research regarding lived experiences of health and illness in Australia.
